Obituary Gerald Lee Ashford (known to family and friends as Huey), 80, of Acoma Rd., Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at University Medical Center, El Paso, Texas. Visitation will be 9:00 AM 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2019, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rod Foster officiating. Denton- Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Gerald Lee Ashford was born on May 7, 1939 in Cunningham, Texas to Eulis and Helen Ashford. He had two brothers Harold Ray and Weldon Paul. Gerald graduated from Amarillo High School where he, of 65 of course played on the basketball team! On April 26, 1957, he married Jane Carol Sandy Robbins. They had four children: Gregory Lee, Gary Lynn, Christy Lanette and Garrod Lane. Gerald was a miner in both uranium in Northern New Mexico and potash in Carlsbad. In 1982, he went to work at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant where he was sinking the salt shaft. He continued to work there until his retirement in 2004. Gerald and Ray raced horses together throughout much of their adult lives. His favorite advice was Never bet on an Ashford horse! They had some success and lots of good times. They were joined later by friend Little Ray Ashford and Don Harper. He enjoyed reading and watching old westerns. He had a great deal of knowledge of New Mexico history and knew all the good restaurants. Gerald Lee Ashford was preceded in death by his wife Sandy Ashford; granddaughter: Alicia D. Ashford and grandson: Gideon T. Smith. Survivors are his children: Greg Ashford and wife, Lyndy, Gary Ashford and wife, Gloria, Christy Smith and husband, Mark and Garrod Ashford and wife, Tonya; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews who will miss their Grandad and Uncle Huey. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
