Gayla D. Goodwin Rice, 52, of Primrose Lane, passed away June 6, 2014 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. No formal service is scheduled at this time. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Friends are invited to visit the family at the home. Gayla was born September 20, 1961 to Geraldine and Charles Goodwin in Midland, Texas. She graduated from McClellan High School in 1980 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Gayla was a trailblazer by being one of the first kidney transplant recipients at the early age of 9 years old at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She was dubbed a "miracle child" by her doctors. Gayla was loved by everyone she met and left a lasting impression. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Goodwin and step-father J.J. Wyrick. She is survived by her mother, Geraldine "Jerry" Wyrick of Carlsbad; sisters, Nelda Wyrick Cox of Lindale, Texas and Judy Wyrick Calhoun of Norman, OK. She is also survived by her lifelong friends Bonnie Dycus, Cindy McCoy and her beloved dogs, Okie and Keesha. Condolences may be expressed at dentwood.com
