Fred W. Simmons, 84, of Brantley Rd., Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away October 23, 2009 at Lakeview Christian Home. Visitation will be 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Wednsday, October 28, 2009 Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, October 29, 2009, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Leonard Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Fred was born to Arthur David and Sular Rosetti (Cox) Simmons on November 3, 1924. He grew up in New Mexico. Fred lived in Carrizozo, Vaughn and Encino, where his family owned a farm. He served in WWII in the U.S. Army in construction. Fred moved to Carlsbad in 1952 and went to work for Duvall in March 1952 retiring in 1985. He worked primarily as a mechanic. Fred married Lillian Campbell on March 25, 1946 in Roswell, NM. He was a member of the Otis Baptist Church, B.P.O.E. Lodge #1558, and American Legion Post. He was an active square dance caller and served on the Carlsbad Veteran's Honor Guard for several years. Fred was an avid fisherman and hunter. Fred married Cathy Thompson June 6, 2000 in Roswell, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lillie Simmons in 1997, two brothers, and one sister. Survivors include Wife: Cathy Thompson-Simmons; son: Walter Jeter and wife, Roxie of Kerrville, TX; daughters: Claudian Carpenter and husband, Dale of Ajo, AZ, Sylvia Rose Winters and husband, Danny of Artesia, NM; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Steve Bartlett, Donavan Mager, Stormy Carpenter, Cameron Mager, Jason Rice, Fred Bolen. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
