Frances "Katie" K. Peterson

Frances K. "Katie" Peterson, 89, of West Ural Drive, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, October 9, 2015, 10:00 AM, at Sunset Church of Christ with Dudley Cash and Mike Veilleux officiating. Interment will follow. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Frances K. "Katie" Peterson was born October 21, 1925 in Nimrod, Arkansas to Frank and Minnie (Conwell) McElwee. She graduated from high school in Perryville, Arkansas and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Arkansas State Teachers College. Katie began her teaching career in 1945 and married Roy Donald Peterson on December 16, 1949 in Little Rock, Arkansas. They moved to Albuquerque in 1953 and later to Carlsbad in 1967. Katie retired in 1983 after 38 years of teaching. She was a member of NEA and Delta Kappa Gamma. Katie was a member of Sunset Church of Christ where she was devoted to teaching children's bible class for many years. During retirement Roy and Katie traveled with Sojourners, working with many churches across several states. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, T. C. McElwee. Survivors are her husband, Roy D. Peterson of Carlsbad, NM; two sons: Don Peterson and wife, Denice of Carlsbad, NM, Steve Peterson and wife, Glenell of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren: Preston Peterson and wife, Sarai of Artesia, NM, Lynde Longbine and husband, Jeremy of Amarillo, TX, Emily Metcalf and husband, Heath of Roswell, NM, Eric Peterson of Albuquerque, NM, Sarah Peterson of Canyon, TX; great-grandchildren: Edgar Rodriguez, Yesid Peterson, Jack Peterson, Callie Metcalf, Kason Longbine, LanDree Longbine, Hallie Jo Metcalf; brother, Frank McElwee and wife, Rochelle of Heber Springs, AR and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Preston Peterson, Eric Peterson, Jeremy Longbine, John Berg, Heath Metcalf, Pryde Brown and Edgar Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Rudy Woolf, Dub Williams, E. H.
