Obituary Farris Vaughan, 90, of Glasier Drive, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Friday, February 23, 2018 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 4:00 PM 7:00 PM, Friday, March 2, 2018 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 2018, 11:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Hosford officiating. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Cremation will take place following the service. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Farris Vaughan was born January 1, 1928 in Amarillo, Texas to John Farris and Mary Pearl (Smoot) Vaughan. He grew up in the Texas panhandle and graduated from high school in Tulia, Texas. Farris served his country in the U.S. Army right after WWII. He graduated from North Texas College. It was there he met and married Ruth Hosford August 27, 1950 in Denison, Texas. They moved to Carlsbad in 1955 where he began teaching with the Carlsbad Municipal Schools. Farris received his masters degree from University of Oklahoma in 1967. He had 35 years with the Carlsbad Schools upon retiring and was recently honored by Mayor Dale Janway for that longevity and service with the schools. Farris was a member of First United Methodist Church, B.P.O. Elks, Lodge 1558, AARP, NEA and other educational associations. He enjoyed reading and traveling with his family to the many National Parks. Farris served as a tour guide at the Caverns during the summer months. He was always eager to learn and teach those around him. Farris loved attending the grandchildren and great-grandchildrens sports and activities. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Eric Vaughan. Survivors are his wife, Ruth Vaughan of Carlsbad, NM; sons: Greg Vaughan and wife, Terri of Carlsbad, NM, Roger Vaughan of Austin, Texas; grandchildren: LaRay Mayrhofen and husband, Kit, Brandon Denton and wife, Amy, Jessica Barnes and husband, Chad, Erica West and husband, Tyler and Charlie Vaughan; great-grandchildren: Haylee, Erin, Tyler, Krysalin, Cassidy, Luke, Ayden, Aubrianna and Avery; sister, Lila Mae Lear of Lubbock, Texas; brother, Bob M. Vaughan of Lubbock, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Brandon Denton, Tyler West, Chad Barnes, Mike Hosford, Ayden Barnes, Tyler Mayrhofen and Kit Mayrhofen.
