Elvis E. Melvin, 86, of Fiesta Drive, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away October 2, 2009 in Carlsbad. Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 2009, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Graveside Service is scheduled for Friday, October 9, 2009, 2:00 PM, at Carlsbad Cemetery with Pastor Michael P. Stone, Jr. officiating. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Elvis E. Melvin was born January 4, 1923 in West Frankfort, Illinois to Elijah and Clara (Mocaby) Melvin. He married Dorothy Beaver in Jackson, Missouri on October 5, 1941. Elvis was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1942 to 1944, serving in the Pacific Theater. The Melvin family moved to Loving, NM in 1955, where they raised their family. He retired from Duval in 1987. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Richard Melvin in 2004; wife, Dorothy in 2005; daughter, JoAnn Holman in 2006; brother, Harold Melvin and sister, Alegra Smith. Survivors include his son, James Melvin and wife, Karen of Carlsbad, NM; daughter, Sharon Kay Mecklenberg and husband, Ronnie of San Angelo, TX; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Samuel Melvin of Solano Beach, CA and Roscoe Melvin of Carlsbad, NM.
