Edith M. Johnson was born on August 3, 1928, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, to Henry and Julia Lavina (Gillen) Stokum. At the age of 4, Edith's mother died. Edith and two siblings, Eleanor and Richard, moved to the local children's home in Greensburg. Ultimately they were all separated. Edith remained there until the age of seventeen. Edith's oldest brother, Edward, was able to later pick up all of the surviving siblings and their father and move them to Carlsbad in 1945. Edith married Claude Johnson on March 25, 1946 here in Carlsbad. She worked as an LPN at St. Francis Hospital from 1960 to 1974. Edith then went to work for Dr. Miner until retiring in 1987 due to her being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Edith's hobbies included weekly garage sales, fishing, camping, cooking and spoiling her grandchildren. Her sweet and gracious nature had a profound impact on the lives of all the people around her. She was precious and dear to her kids and grandkids, and was a mom to many kids. Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claude Johnson; brothers: Edward Stokum, Richard Stokum and Henry L. Stokum; and a sister, Eleanor Stokum.
Survivors are her children: Judy M. Warren and husband, Robert of Carlsbad, NM, Johnny Johnson and wife, Evelyn of Bloomfield, NM, and Jeanette Hand and husband, E.C. of Carlsbad, NM; 12 grandchildren: Russell Warren, David Warren, Jodie Sparks, Kelli Warren, Keri Blair, Donn Warren, Justin Johnson, Misty Johnson, Tyray Jensen, Angela Chavez, Jessica Bell and Johnny Hand; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
