Edgar W. Magby

Edgar W. Magby, passed away on March 25, at the age of 91. He was surrounded by his wife and children.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 PM to 7 PM on Thursday, April 1. Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 2, at 11 AM in Dog Canyon at 5452 Queen HWY.
Edgar Magby, was born on April 7, 1929, to Ivy Lee and Pearl Magby, in Carlsbad. His childhood was spent in Dog Canyon, which was his family’s homestead. Edgar and his eight siblings, attended the one room school house at the El Paso Gap until the 8th grade. His baptism was at age 8, in the old mud tank, in Dog Canyon. He would ride his horse to school, check his traps, and make sure the family goats were safe from predators. A home was purchased in Carlsbad, by his parents, to further their high school education. Edgar served in the U.S. Army as Sergeant First Class during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He met and married Joy Moon in 1953. Edgar and his wife were blessed by the gift of six children; Justin, LaVerne, Roland, Brad, Larea and Shane (died at birth). He worked at the Potash Mines until his retirement, while continuing to farm and ranch.
Throughout his life, Edgar enjoyed spending time in Dog Canyon with his family. As he and Joy’s children grew up, they participated in their kids rodeos, 4H, and FFA. One of his favorite pastimes was horsemanship. Edgar would break and train his own horses and show them in Western Pleasure and Halter classes. He liked going to the horse and mule races in Ruidoso Downs, dancing with his wife, and hunting. He worked hard in all aspects of his life, whether it be farming, ranching, his job, or his time in the military. Edgar loved listening to his family’s jamboree sessions that grew as his family did. Family and friends always enjoyed his great jokes and stories of how things used to be. Edgar was a friend to all that knew him and will always be fondly remembered.
Edgar Magby was proceeded in death by his parents, siblings, and son. Edgar is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Joy Magby; son, Justin Magby and wife Kathy, of Paden, Oklahoma; daughter LaVerne and husband David Maley of Carlsbad; son Roland Magby, of Carlsbad; son Brad Magby and wife Leslie of Bakersfield, CA; and daughter Larea and husband Todd Seevers, of Helendale, CA. Edgar is also survived by his nine grandchildren; Wes Magby (Jolene), Jason Maley (Cate), Kristy Ross (Michael), Jeff Maley (Kristy), Allen Magby (Sam), Jake Magby (Melanie), Jill Rueter (Ryan), Jordan Seevers (Amanda), and Shelbi Hoiten (Scott). He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren with one more expected any day, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wes Magby, Jason Maley, Jeff Maley, Allen Magby, Jake Magby, and Scott Hoiten. Honorary Pallbearers are Jordan Seevers, Bryce Maley, David Maley, Todd Seevers, Ryan Rueter and Michael Ross.
