Ed Kerby, 92, of Pinon Lane, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013 at his home. There will be no public visitation. A Graveside Service is scheduled for 1:00 PM, Friday, September 13, 2013 at Floyd Cemetery in Floyd, NM. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion. Refreshments will be served at the Senior Citizen's Club House in Floyd after the service. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Edwin Lewis Kerby was born in Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas on August 14, 1921 to Claude Andrew and Ila Ophelia (Casbeer) Kerby. He enlisted in the US Army September 9, 1942 and served at 100 Station Company Squadron during WWII as a Crew Chief. Ed received a Victory Metal and a Good Conduct Metal and was honorably discharged on February 2, 1946. He married Evelyn Best on July 10, 1948 in the preacher's study of the First Baptist Church in Portales, NM. Ed enjoyed fiddle music, his own airplanes, raising and racing horses. He loved welding and making everything from trailers to miniature windmills and small craft items. Ed loved his family first and foremost and was always there for them. He had various occupations throughout his life such as farming, ranching, custom farm work and trucking. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; Al Kerby, Jim Kerby, Bill Kerby and sister, Mary Beth Freudiger. Survivors are his wife, Evelyn Kerby of Carlsbad, NM; children: Carole Bryant and husband, Gene of Carlsbad, NM, Kevin Kerby and wife, Vicki of Lubbock, TX, Kim Elias and husband, Charles of Boerne, TX; grandchildren: Darren Bryant and wife, Christina, Gina Bryant, Cody Kerby and wife, Rebekah, Cameron Kerby and wife, Abbe, Blake Kerby and wife, Haley, Ashley Elias and Michael Elias; great-grandchildren: Megan, Chase, Austin, Rylie, Kinslee, Brantley; brother, Jack Kerby and wife, Marsha of Colorado Springs, CO and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Darren Bryant, Cody Kerby, Cameron Kerby, Blake Kerby, Chase Bryant and Austin Cox. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
