When Duberta was 10 days old (9/4/1944), he was called up for service in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Basic training was in California and the family spent Christmas in California with him. He was shipped out to Okinawa where he was wounded by a Japanese knee mortar. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 and received the Purple Heart.
Dubert and his father, Alonzo started Smith and Son Welding Shop on South Canyon St. on June 1, 1946, just shy of 69 years ago.

He was a member of the Fox and Lake Church of Christ and served many years as a deacon there. Dubert was preceded in death by his mother, Emma Smith; his father, Alonzo Smith and two sisters: Geraldine and Treva Mozelle.
