Doris “Janice” Laird, 83, of W. Pierce Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away September 7, 2022 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with nephew, Tim Ross officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Janice was born September 16, 1938 in Portales, New Mexico to Fate Eugene and Jessie Reese (Nicholas) Brasher and moved to Carlsbad at 9 years old with her family. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1956. Janice attended Hardin Simmons University and received an associates degree from NMSU-Carlsbad. She married Bob Laird, her high school sweetheart, February 1, 1959 here in Carlsbad. Janice worked as a secretary for Hillcrest Baptist Church and First Baptist Church before going to work with the Carlsbad Municipal Schools. She retired as an administrative secretary in 2003 after 26 years of service. Janice and Bob were long-time active members at Hillcrest Baptist Church where Janice taught Sunday Bible School for many years. They rarely ever missed a ballgame through the years watching their children and later their grandchildren’s games. Janice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Laird; son, Mark Laird; daughter, Toni Laird; brothers: Winston Brasher, Wayne Brasher and Jim Brasher.
Survivors are her grandchildren: Whitney Warminski and husband, Patrick of White Deer, Texas, Amanda Milliken and husband, Jarred of Carlsbad, NM, Jacob Laird and wife, Sara of Hobbs, NM, Seth Tanner of Carlsbad, NM; daughter-in-love, Kelly Laird of Carlsbad, NM; great-grandchildren: Brooklinn Warminski, Breckon Milliken, Hannah Warminski, Carlin Milliken and Cooper Laird; sister, Sharon Ross of Bertram, Texas and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Seth Tanner, Jacob Laird, Sam Plumlee, Tim Ross, Larry Brasher and Patrick Warminski. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com
