David Ortiz Hernandez

David Ortiz Hernandez, 67, of Martin Lane, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. Visitation will be 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Monday, January 22, 2024 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home.  A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, January 23, 2024 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, at San Jose Catholic Church with Fr. Juan Carlos Ramirez officiating.  Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico.

David was born August 26, 1956 to Porfirio and Trinidad (Ortiz) Hernandez in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1975.

David married his loving wife, Carmen Castillo on September 1, 1979 in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where they built their family home. They raised their two children in the family home and David was always eager to have his grandchildren come over to be his helpers.

David worked construction for many years before he became a general contractor in 1983 and started his own company, DH Construction. He built many homes and commercial buildings throughout Eddy County and New Mexico. David also worked for 27 years at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant from 1989 until he became ill in 2017, where he met a number of individuals who would come to be life-long friends.

David’s hobbies included woodworking, both big and small projects from building a tree house for the grandkids, wishing wells, crosses and wall pieces as gifts for his loved ones. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his son and other loved ones, and spending time in the mountains. David loved to spoil his grandchildren and give them a hard time to get a laugh. He was always eager to see his girls play ball and was a proud grandpa. David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

David was preceded in death by his father, Porfirio S. Hernandez.

David is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carmen Castillo Hernandez; mother, Trinidad (Ortiz) Hernandez; son, Christopher Castillo Hernandez and fiancé, Shanna Fierro; daughter Sarah Marie Ceniceros, and son-in-law, Manuel of Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren: Micaela, Analicia, Aubrey, Addison, David Lucas, and Alexis; siblings: Virginia (Jeannie) Valenzuela and husband, Rudy, Ricardo Hernandez and wife, Grace, Margarita (Maggie) Buendia and husband, Manuel, Teresa Hernandez, Christina H. Acosta and husband, Fernando, Alicia Quintela and husband, Jimmy, Elizabeth Franco and husband, Cesar.
