Clarence J. Cooper, Sr., 89, of Irvin Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Friday, May 15, 2015 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2015, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Brad Coates of First Assembly of God Church officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Clarence J. Cooper, Sr. was born November 19, 1925 in El Paso, TX to Jim N. and Nora Lima (Grey) Cooper. He grew up in Pampa and Miami, Texas. Clarence served his country in the US Army during WWII. He married Dorothy Lee Hitchcock on November 19, 1944 in San Pablo, CA. They moved to Carlsbad in January of 1947. Clarence went to work at US Borax and retired form the potash mines after 34 years of service. He took pride in the fact that he worked as a cross guard for over 25 years. Clarence was a long time member of First Assembly of God Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy L. Cooper; 5 brothers and 6 sisters. Survivors are his son, C. J. Cooper, Jr. and wife, Donnalynn of Ashburn, VA; daughters: Doris J. Pilger and husband, Jack of Lubbock, TX, Lola M. Shugard and husband, Michael of Mineral Wells, TX; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Blaine Pettes, Don Devers, Doug Evans, Ron Arrington, Mike Cooley and Orlando Guvara.
