Charles S. Huff

Stanley Charles Huff, also known as Charles S. Huff of River Bend, Carlsbad, NM, entered final rest on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. Charles was born on December 19, 1918, in Tucumcari, NM to Otto A. and Addie Mae (Holley) Huff. He graduated from Tucumcari schools with honors both scholastically and athletically. He received honors in basketball and football and was given a football scholarship to NMSU-Las Cruces, NM. Charles was salutatorian of the class of 1936. Charles attended NMSU the first one and a half years of his college career. He received his geological degree from UNM but always felt NMSU was his alma mater. First Sergeant Huff served his country in World War II with the 813 Engineer Aviation Battalion of the army. He was engineer construction foreman in charge of construction, repair and maintenance of B29 air strips. He was also an expert rifleman. After discharge, Charles worked with the Corps of Engineers and then transferred to the atomic energy commission. For the AEC, he was engineer in charge of construction of the Meson facility in Los Alamos, NM as well as overseeing other installations over the U.S. One of his pleasures was having had a visit with President Kennedy at the facility in Las Vegas. Charles worked closely with the scientists on the Meson since this was the first installation of its kind the world over. He worked closely with Dr. Louis Rosen for whom he established a memorial endowed scholarship in engineering at NMSU-Las Cruces. Charles was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and served as an elder in churches in Albuquerque and Los Alamos, NM and Las Vegas, Nevada. Service to his Lord was priority. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil and Norman Huff; and sister, Faye (Huff) Daugherity. Survivors include Geneva, his wife of 36 years; daughter, Connie Lux and husband, David; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, August 3, 2012, from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Services will be conducted by Dale Huff, Eliseo Alcon and J. Loftis, on Saturday, August 4, 2012, at 3:00 PM at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at 1:30 PM, at Tucumcari Memorial Park, Tucumcari, NM. Memorial contributions may be made to Search, P.O.
