Carol Jennette Duplissey

On Sunday, November 9, 2014, Carol Jennette Duplissey was released from her earthly body and called home; her daughter was at her side. With the assistance of her grandson, Jason Sedgwick, great-granddaughter, Ashley Sedgwick, and Lori and Pat of Lakeview Hospice, she was able to spend her final days at home, surrounded by loved ones. Our beloved matriarch was born August 15, 1930 to Marshall Webb Crouse and Myrtle Odel (Ledbetter) Crouse in Miami, Florida. She grew to be a beautiful woman, who knew exactly what she wanted and what she thought; she was a force to be reckoned with. She caught the eye of James Joshe Duplissey and they later married on August 21, 1948. He'd met his match in his strong willed young bride, and soon they started a family. Their first child, James Joshe Jr., was born November 16, 1950 and on that day she became what she will always be most remembered for; a mother. On February 3, 1954, they welcomed Jesse Dean and on May 16, 1957, their family was finally complete with the birth of Jennette Jay. Over the years, there would be struggles. They would move several times in the search for work, until finally settling in Carlsbad, NM in 1964. They bought a house on Edward Street and although money was tight, she would turn it into a warm, loving home for their children. At times, when Josh traveled for work, she would parent alone; her perseverance and determination made her the glue that would hold her family together. As her babies grew up and had babies of their own, she became known as "Nana". It became her identity, a name she would be known for by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their friends long into adulthood. It is a name that will forever personify love, home, and strength to those who knew her. Although her family was her greatest achievement, she was a woman of many talents. She was a crafter, a painter, and quilter; in the last few months of her life she was honored into the Zia Quilt & Stitchery Guild. She was a wonderful cook. Although she had a "tough as nails" exterior, she had a tender heart and a great love for animals and babies. She had a subtle, delightful sense of humor, and she LOVED a good piece of pie. She is survived by her sister, Betty Jean Squires; her brother, Marshall "Sonny" Crouse Jr. and wife, Ginny; her son, Reverend Josh Duplissey Jr.; her son, Jesse Duplissey Sr.; her daughter. Jennette Duplissey and partner, Kent McCraw; her grandchildren: Jason Sedgwick, Wendy Rhoades, Amanda Miller, Marshall Phillips, and Jesse Duplissey Jr. She had ten great-grandchildren, and many, many "honorary" kids whom she loved and nurtured as their "Nana" as well. She is preceded in death by her father, Marshall Webb Crouse; her Mother, Myrtle Odel (Ledbetter) Crouse, and her beloved husband, James Joshe Duplissey Sr. Although she didn't always understand, or agree with, her children and grandchildren, she loved them fiercely. She was very proud of all of their accomplishments, big or small. The weight of her absence is immense. Pallbearers will be Jason Sedgwick, Marshall Phillips, Jesse Duplissey, Jr., Kent McCraw, Billy Snelson and Alfred Miller. A celebration of her life will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Duplissey, Jr. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to Noah's Ark, 5217 Buena Vista, Carlsbad, NM 88220, an organization dear to her heart. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
