Carmanell Alice Nixon Blacksher, 93, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Landsun Health Services Center. Visitation will be 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Sunday, November 17, 2013 and 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM, Monday, November 18, 2013 at Denton Wood Funeral Home. Graveside services are scheduled for Monday, November 18, 2013, 2:00 PM, at Sunset Gardens Cemetery with Phillip Johnson of Southside Church of Christ, officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Carmanell was born in Cullman, Alabama on September 18, 1920, the second youngest in a farming family of four girls and four boys. As a young lady she worked in a defense plant in Birmingham, Alabama. Carmanell met and married Robert Nixon. In 1946, they moved with their young son to Carlsbad, NM. She went to work for the Carlsbad school system and achieved a management position. Carmanell also obtained a degree in Home Economics. Thirty years later, she retired to begin real estate investing with her husband. After several successful years Robert passed away leaving Carmanell to continue on her own. Carmanell eventually met and married George Blacksher. They lived happily through their later years until George passed away. During this time they travelled and visited their families. Carmanell enjoyed exercise classes and quilting. Above all she enjoyed her wonderful family. Carmanell is survived by her son, Gary L. Nixon and two grandchildren, Patricia and Stephen Nixon, all of Santa Barbara California. She has one remaining sister, Ms Ruth Poarch, of Birmingham Alabama. Also nieces Joyce, Barbara, Frances, Linda, and Bonnie; nephews Oliver, and John; stepsons Ronnie and Larry. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
