Obituary
Billy Joe Thompson, 75 of Carlsbad, passed away Tuesday August 20, 2019 peacefully at home.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00am at Monday August 26, 2019 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Garry Schwalk of the First Baptist Church of Carlsbad officiating. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 9:00am at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Billy BJ was born November 21, 1943, in Durant, Oklahoma, to Elise Majors Thompson and Willard Jewel Thompson. Billy graduated Carlsbad High School and attended the University of New Mexico on an athletic scholarship. Upon graduation from UNM Billy settled in Carlsbad and taught school and coached at Alta Vista. Billy also worked at a business he started in Lubbock, Texas with his best friend and moved back to Carlsbad after a period of time with stints at WIPP and managing the books and accounting at a family owned retail store that was in business from 1975-2001.
He was preceded in his death by his parents. He is survived by a son, Ryan Thompson and wife Amy of Austin, TX; sister, Martha Sukovich and husband Steve of Dallas, TX; nephew, Scott Sukovich of New York, NY.
Before Billy passed, he was inducted into the Carlsbad HS athletic Hall of Fame in September of 2018. He had an unbelievable athletic career in HS and at the University of New Mexico and cherished the honor from last September more than you could know. Billy was loved more than words can say and will be missed but remembered for his kindness, love and trust in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is in the ultimate kingdom and at peace.
