Billy C. Phillips, 84, of Grandi Road, Carlsbad, NM, passed away March 26, 2021 at Carlsbad Medical Center.
Visitation will be 4 PM – 6 PM, Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation is limited to 20 people at a time and facial coverings are required. A graveside service is scheduled for 11:30 AM, Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Carlsbad Cemetery Gazebo with Charlie Weatherford officiating.
Billy was born February 5, 1937 in Brady, Texas to Ernest V. and DoraEtta (Goodrich) Phillips, and moved to Carlsbad with his parents as a child. He graduated from Carlsbad High School and later attended NMSU-Carlsbad. Bill married Darlene McCall February 14, 1955 here in Carlsbad. He worked in the potash mines several years before taking over the family business and creating Phillips Cowboy Shop. Bill operated the store over 40 years before retiring in 2015. He was a master boot maker, carpenter and cabinet maker. Bill passed down his knowledge of leather craft to many friends and family, which they will cherish forever. He always loved the time spent with his “coffee buddies”. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson, Kale Crandall.
Survivors are his wife, Darlene Phillips; daughter, Deana Wells and husband, Cameron and son, Will Phillips; grandchildren: Jill Crandall and husband, Travis, Joy Massey and husband, Joel, Camie Wells and Carlie Wells; great-grandchildren: Caleb, Carter, Kort, Kaylah, Kace, Koen and Khloe; brother-in-law, Dick McCall and wife, Milly and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Austin Lewis, Randy Richardson, James R. Gibson, Jim Crouch, Buddy Lee, Matt Defer and Kenneth Yeager.
