Bertha White

Alice B. "Bertha" White, 93, of West Riverside Drive, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Lakeview Christian Home. Visitation will be 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, December 19, 2011, 10:00 AM, at Sunset Church of Christ with Mike Veilleux officiating. A private family interment will be in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Bertha was born July 2, 1918 on her father's ranch near Newkirk, New Mexico. Her parents were Pedro and Elojia Romero. Bertha graduated from High School in Vaughn, NM and attended New Mexico Highlands University. She married Richard F. White in 1942 and worked as a secretary while he was in India during WWII. In addition to her career as a secretary for Southern Union Gas Company and Union Industrial Corp, Betha found the time to be a homemaker, Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout Den Mother and one of the founders of the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club. She was a faithful member of the Sunset Church of Christ for many years. Although burdened by muscular dystrophy for many years, she maintained her quick wit and sense of humor. One of her favorite pastimes was the challenge of working the daily crossword puzzle in ink. Just before her 92nd birthday, she asked for a map of the world so she could follow the turmoil in the Middle East. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard F. White; one brother and five sisters. Survivors are her brother, Horace Romero of Weatherford, TX; sister, Margaret Dye of San Antonio, TX; four children: Virginia A. "Ginny" Gregory and husband, Phil of Carlsbad, NM, Diana Clem and husband Ron of Carlsbad, NM, Charles "Butch" White and wife, Terry of Grandbury, Texas, John White and wife, Connie of Chandler, Arizona; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Clayton Grimes, Scott McCall, Robert Gregory, John Hendricks, Mike Romero and Matt Defer. Memorial contributions may be made to Lakeview Christian Home, 1905 W.
