Alvin Mata Nichols, 57, of Carlsbad, NM, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Texas Tech University Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Visitation will be 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Vigil is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2013, 7:00 PM at San Jose Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial is are scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2013, 2:00 PM, at San Jose Catholic Church with Father Valentine Jankowski, OFM, Conv. officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Alvin Mata Nichols was born September 30, 1956 in Carlsbad, NM to Alvino and Elena (Mata) Nichols. He worked for Big O Tire Company for over 10 years. Alvin also worked as a mechanic for Sahara Transport. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Alvin was preceded in death by his father, Alvino Nichols; brothers: Frank Mata, Eliseo Acosta; uncles: Ismael Mata, Willie Mata, Joe "Rare" Mata and Robert Mata. Survivors are his wife, Helen Nichols of Tucson, AZ; two daughters: Evita Valdez of Carlsbad, NM, Monica Nichols of Carlsbad, NM; son, Alvin Nichols, III of Turpin, OK; mother: Elena Acosta of Hobbs, NM; 10 grandchildren; three brothers: Larry Nichols, Mario Acosta, Elias Acosta; five sisters: Olga Nichols, Delma Acosta, Maria Acosta, Tabitha Acosta, Gloria Muoz; aunts: Lydia Baeza, Carolina Lujan, Felipa Mata, Eloisa Galvan, Andrea Gomez, Dora Mata; uncle, Max Mata; cousin and best friend, Danny Franco and wife, Sarah and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Benny Doporto, Frankie Mata, Alfred Carrasco, Richard Mata, Mike Mendoza and Lee Franco. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
