Alton L. "Smitty" Smith, 90, of North Country Club Circle, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away September 8, 2010 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A Funeral Service is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010, 4:00 PM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Brian McGonagil officiating. A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Highland Cemetery, Durant, Oklahoma. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Alton L. "Smitty" Smith was born August 27, 1920 in Meade, Oklahoma to John and Ella (Southerland) Smith. He married Edith Ash on August 24, 1940 in Meade, Oklahoma. Smitty and Edith moved to Carlsbad in 1946 where he went to work in the Potash Mines. Edith died May 7, 1966. Later Smitty married Joyce Stephens on September 25, 1969 in Fort Worth, Texas. Smitty worked at the Durant Court House in Durant, Oklahoma for over 20 years. Smitty and Joyce moved back to Carlsbad in 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith Smith; brothers: Alfred E. Smith, Tarrup Smith. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Smith of Carlsbad, NM; seven children: Norma Beeman of Carlsbad, NM, Linda Amos and husband, Jim of Carlsbad, NM, Claudia Stapleton and husband, Mikeal of Ruidoso, NM; Ricky Dean Smith and wife, Julie of Carlsbad, NM, Ronnie Alan Smith of Carlsbad, NM, Donna Hays and husband, Jack of Carlsbad, NM, Buddy Stephens and wife, Brenda of Stephenville, TX; 12 grandchildren: Linda, Pamela, Brandy, Cathy, Keith, Melanie, Jennifer, Carol, Randy, Valerie, Kimberly, Shyla; 23 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Don Smith; sister-in-law, Dean Rowland and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Ricky Smith, Jerry Hitchcock, Mike Stapleton, Jim Amos, Jack Hays and Buddy Stephens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE # 300, Albuquerque, NM 87111. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
