Alice P. Mahaffey Stanco, 89, of East Fiesta Drive, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Landsun Homes. Visitation will be 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM, Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 26, 2015, 10:00 AM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor D. Michael Lee officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Alice P. Mahaffey Stanco was born January 4, 1926 in Premier, West Virginia to Dewey Talmage and Ella Brooke (Long) Mahaffey. She was the second oldest of nine children. Alice was the only girl with four brothers for many years and was a bit of a tomboy and competed with her brothers in all things. She then had three little sisters. She loved all of her siblings and family and worried about them constantly. Alice married Joe Stanco in March of 1947 and was married for 65 years until he passed away. She taught school for 30 years beginning in West Virginia then in Malaga and finally retiring from Monterrey School. She loved her students and they loved her. Alice was an awesome teacher and role model to many. She loved her family, her students and above all she loved God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; mother and father; three brothers and one sister. Alice's family and friends will miss her so much, but can be thankful for her 89 years of wit and courage to the end. Thanks to the wonderful nurses and CNA's at Landsun for loving her and caring for her. She is survived by her daughter, Joella Wilson and husband, Mark of Carlsbad, NM; son, Andrew Stanco and wife, Donna of Del Rio, TX; three grandchildren: Hunter Stanco and wife, Jessie of San Antonio, TX, Whitney Hagopian and husband, Matt of Washington, DC, Nicholas Wilson and Dee Munoz of Carlsbad, NM; great- grandchildren: Hayden Thomas Berry, J. Lynn Tyler Wilson, Ruby Alice Stanco, Zadain Nicholas Wilson, Ella Victoria Hagopian, Phoebe Kate Stanco, Bridget Nikole Wilson, Luke Reid Hagopian; three sisters: Ethel Lee Stoneman, Nancy Ryzenman, Judy Mahaffey, brother, Robert Mahaffey and his daughter, Nancy Lee Whittemore of Carlsbad, NM and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Hunter Stanco, Nicholas Wilson, Mark Wilson, Skipper Briggs, Grady Gist and Garry Whittemore. Memorial contributions may be made to World Vision, P.O.
