Alfredo “Sonny” Lopez, 70, of Sunrise Road, Malaga, NM, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Las Cruces, NM.
Visitation will be 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited at 9:00 AM, Wednesday, June 1, 2022 followed by Liturgy outside the Mass at 9:30 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Loving, with Deacon Manny Chavez officiating. Interment will follow in Loving Cemetery. A meal will be served at the Loving Community Center following burial.
Sonny was born August 20, 1951 in Loving, NM to Jim and Margarita (Acosta) Lopez and was raised in Harroun Farm and Malaga. He worked for many years at various mines in the area before retiring. Throughout his life he loved working on the family farm and helping others. He repaired countless tractors, vehicles, lawn mowers and anything that had a motor and enjoyed every minute of it. Another favorite hobby of his was woodworking, especially with old barnwood. He loved being outdoors even if it was just sitting at the table in the backyard visiting with family and friends. Sonny spent many years volunteering his time at the Loving Spanish Assembly of God Church. He also served as an usher at San Jose Catholic Church.
He enjoyed spending time with family and loved ones. He loved helping others learn and watching them grow. He taught many lessons about hard work and finding an honest trade. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by ex-wife, Corina Lopez; brother, Jim Lopez, Jr. and sister, Thelma Calderon and parents, Jim Lopez and Margarita (Acosta) Lopez.
Survivors are his son, James Daniel Lopez and wife, Bobbi of Ft. Davis, Texas; grandchildren: Adelyn Lopez and Austyn Simpson of Ft. Davis, Texas; sisters: Sally Vasquez and husband, Tony, Lucy Gonzalez and husband, Leo; brothers: Herman Lopez, Henry Lopez and wife, Selina, David Lopez; brother-in-law, Ben Calderon; sister-in-law, Bea Lopez; aunt, Irene Campos and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Paul Espino, Rudy Vasquez, Benny Calderon, Lupito Carrasco, Carlos Santana and Austyn Simpson.
